Sushila Karki Becomes Nepal’s First Woman Prime Minister, To Lead Interim Government
Kathmandu, Sept 12: Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been appointed to lead an interim government, making history as the country’s first woman Prime Minister. The announcement came from the office of President Ramchandra Paudel on Friday, ending days of political uncertainty following the abrupt resignation of former PM K P Sharma Oli earlier this week.
Historic Appointment
Karki, 73, is widely respected for her tenure as Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice. She will take oath at 9 pm today, according to Presidential Press Advisor Kiran Pokharel. After assuming office, she is expected to form a small cabinet and recommend dissolution of Parliament in line with an agreement reached among stakeholders.
Background of Political Turmoil
Oli resigned on Tuesday following Gen Z-led mass protests over corruption, nepotism, and a controversial social media ban. The ban was lifted earlier this week amid mounting public anger. Consultations between President Paudel, Nepal Army officials, and representatives of youth protesters paved the way for Karki’s appointment.
Demands of Protesters
The protests demanded stronger measures to tackle corruption, end political disorder and favoritism, and restore freedom of digital communication. At least 51 people, including one Indian national and three policemen, lost their lives during the unrest, according to Nepal Police.
Leaders Call for Rule of Law
Earlier on Friday, Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives Devaraj Ghimire and National Assembly Chairman Narayan Dahal issued a joint statement emphasizing resolution of the crisis within the constitutional framework. They urged all sides to address protesters’ demands while safeguarding democracy.
“The rule of law and constitutionalism must not be bypassed. Democracy should emerge stronger and more resilient,” their statement read.
