Russian S-400 Triumf missile system to be fully delivered to India by 2026

MOSCOW, Sept 22: Russia will complete the supply of S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems to India in 2026, fulfilling the USD 5.43 billion (₹40,000 crore) deal signed between the two nations in 2018, according to reports from state-run TASS news agency.

A defence source confirmed that four systems have already been delivered and the fifth will be handed over next year, marking the conclusion of the contract.

The landmark deal was signed on October 5, 2018, despite the threat of US CAATSA sanctions. In March 2021, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin warned India that the purchase could attract penalties, but Washington has so far held back from invoking the law as deliveries continue.

The S-400, widely regarded as one of the most advanced surface-to-air defence systems in the world, has already been deployed in India. Minister of State Sanjay Seth, during his visit to Moscow earlier this year, said the system proved its effectiveness during Operation Sindoor.

Seth also noted that India is exploring the option of purchasing Russia’s next-generation S-500 missile systems to further bolster its air defence capabilities.
