Jammu, September 4, 2025 — In a key infrastructure step, the Ministry of Railways has proposed the construction of a new **40.2 km Baramulla–Uri railway line** and the **doubling of a 73.5 km Qazigund–Budgam stretch**, according to a statement issued after the 99th Network Planning Group meeting in New Delhi, aligned with the PM Gati Shakti plan. Key Project Highlights
- The proposed Baramulla–Uri line includes construction of three road-under bridges (RUBs) and nine road-over bridges (ROBs) and requires new land acquisition.
- Doubling the existing Qazigund–Budgam single track will expand capacity, reduce train delays, and enhance both civilian and military logistics—the corridor has been designated as a “Hill & Strategic Corridor.”
- The proposal promises reliable, all-weather connectivity that will benefit tourism in Uri and improve strategic mobility in border-adjacent areas.
What It Means
Integration of these rail projects with the recently commissioned Katra–Banihal section will form a more robust network that enables quicker, safer, and cost-effective movement of people and goods across the Valley. The expansion is a strategic boost to both defence logistics and local economies.
