People in J&K Disappointed, Says NC MP Ruhullah Mehdi
Srinagar, Sept 11: National Conference (NC) Lok Sabha MP Ruhullah Mehdi said that people in Jammu & Kashmir are “disappointed” with the lack of empowerment and accountability after the National Conference received a strong mandate in the Assembly polls.
Disappointment Over Unfulfilled Promises
Speaking at an event in Anantnag organized by civil society groups, Mehdi said that the people had hoped for real change — especially in terms of empowerment — but so far they have seen little progress. He stated that elected representatives must fight for the issues they promised during elections.
On Article 370 and Reservation Policy
Mehdi also emphasized that restoring Jammu & Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 and reforming the reservation policy were key issues raised in NC’s manifesto, but they remain largely unaddressed.
Critique of PSA Use
Regarding the Public Safety Act (PSA), he said it was initially intended to curb timber smuggling, but it is now being misused. He urged lawmakers to uphold public safety justice without abusing legal instruments.
