ISLAMABAD, Sept 24: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will briefly travel from New York to Washington on Thursday to hold talks with US President Donald Trump, as the two sides attempt to reset their strained bilateral relations, according to diplomatic sources quoted by The Express Tribune.
Shehbaz, currently in New York for the UN General Assembly (UNGA), will return the same day after the White House meeting to continue his scheduled engagements. This will be the first meeting between a Pakistani Prime Minister and Trump since July 2019, when Imran Khan visited Washington.
Observers note that President Joe Biden, during his tenure, never reached out to any Pakistani Prime Minister, leaving relations at a diplomatic freeze. However, since Trump returned to office in January, there has been a marked shift in Washington’s approach to Islamabad.
The meeting follows Trump’s unusual one-on-one talks with Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir at the White House in June — a move seen as a strong signal of a potential thaw in relations. Analysts say Thursday’s meeting institutionalises that opening.
“The optics of the army chief’s meeting in June were significant. This meeting institutionalises that opening,” a senior Pakistani official was quoted as saying.
According to officials, discussions are expected to cover bilateral ties, counterterrorism cooperation, Afghanistan, trade, and broader regional issues. Analysts caution, however, that while Trump appears keen to re-engage, the reset of relations is still at an early and tentative stage.
