Omar Abdullah: Security Tightened at Tourist Spots, Push for Tourism & Film Shoots
Chennai, Sept 13: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said security has been intensified at all tourist destinations following the Pahalgam attack in Kashmir and that most tourist spots have now reopened.
Tourism & Film Shoots Encouraged
“The Government is taking all necessary precautions to encourage more tourists to visit Jammu and Kashmir for holidays and film producers and directors for film shoots,” Omar said during a media interaction on the sidelines of a function.
He added that a comprehensive security audit was conducted. “Some destinations are still closed, but most have reopened, and we are ensuring full safety,” he said. Omar also urged more visitors from Tamil Nadu and other southern states to explore J&K not only for politics but also for tourism and film productions.
Call for Stronger North-South Ties
Omar emphasised that efforts must be made to strengthen relationships between northern and southern states. “One of the challenges my Government has taken up is improving connections between states south of the Vindhyas and Jammu and Kashmir. We hope to see more film shootings and more tourists in the years ahead,” he remarked.
Reiterates Statehood Demand
Reasserting the demand for Statehood for J&K, Omar said law and order should be with the elected Government. “We were promised Statehood by the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and others. That promise must be honoured,” he said.
On PM Modi’s Visit to Manipur
Responding to questions, Omar welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur. “It is a good thing, especially after the violence in 2023. We hope peace and calm are restored,” he said.
INDIA Bloc & Congress Role
Omar clarified that there were no differences within the INDIA bloc. “The Congress Party is part of the alliance in J&K Government, though not currently in power. They will join once Statehood is restored,” he said.
On Indo-Pak Cricket Match
Commenting on the upcoming India-Pakistan cricket match (Sept 14), Omar said: “Our problem has always been with bilateral matches. Multilateral ones in tournaments are different. If this can lead to positive relations, nothing like it.”
On AAP MLA’s Detention
On the arrest of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under PSA, Omar said: “Whatever the complaints may be, this is misuse of law and an excessive use of force against an elected representative.”
