Mantalai’s world-class Yoga and Wellness Complex lying idle since 2023
JAMMU, Sept 22: Nearly two years after its completion, the Mantalai Yoga and Wellness Complex — built under the Prime Minister’s Development Package — remains locked, with delays in finalizing the Request for Proposal (RFP) keeping the sprawling facility idle.
Spread over 450 kanals, the ₹crore project was envisioned as a world-class wellness and spiritual tourism hub, featuring a Yoga Centre, Ayurveda spa, eco-log huts, meditation enclave, amphitheatre, heliport, herbal gardens and modern utilities. Despite its grand scale, it is currently guarded only by private security staff.
Sources said the delay lies in finalizing the outsourcing process. A draft RFP prepared by the Transaction Advisor is still under revision after officers sought changes. Financials have now been finalized, but the process requires multiple evaluations before vendors can be shortlisted and contracts awarded.
Tourism operators expressed disappointment, saying the project could have boosted domestic and international tourist inflow, creating jobs and reviving the local economy. “Every season that passes without it being operational is a lost opportunity. The delay has turned a promising wellness hub into a symbol of administrative inertia,” they said.
The Swadesh Darshan Scheme-funded project was executed by the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) through Patel Engineering and completed in September-October 2023. The Patnitop Development Authority (PDA) later took over the assets, while a private agency was engaged for security.
The complex includes meditation halls, Ayurveda spa and wellness centre, herbal gardens, eco-log huts, heliport, amphitheatre, a tourist facilitation centre with conference hall and museum, walking tracks, children’s zones, fountains, and eco-friendly mobility solutions. Despite its potential, the facility remains unused, pending outsourcing approvals.
