LG Kavinder Gupta Highlights GI Tagging as Key to Preserving Ladakh’s Heritage

Leh, September 4, 2025 — Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, underscored the transformative role of Geographical Indication (GI) tagging in boosting the region’s economy while protecting its rich cultural heritage. Speaking during an interaction with GI expert Dr. Rajni Kant, the LG stressed that GI tags will not only safeguard Ladakh’s unique products from imitation but also enhance their market value and global recognition.

Protecting Tradition and Boosting Economy

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Gupta said GI tagging will create fair trade opportunities for artisans and farmers, encourage tourism, and assure consumers of genuine product quality. He reiterated that the UT Administration is committed to securing GI tags for more Ladakhi products so they can access international markets at fair prices.

“Granting Geographical Indications (GIs) to Ladakhi products will give them a unique global identity while safeguarding the region’s centuries-old traditions and indigenous knowledge,” — Kavinder Gupta, LG Ladakh
