Jammu-Srinagar Highway Closed for 9th Day, Restoration Work Races Ahead in Udhampur

Jammu, Sept 9: The 270-kilometre Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained shut to vehicular traffic for the ninth consecutive day on Tuesday as officials continue restoration work on a severely damaged 250-metre section in Udhampur district caused by flash floods and landslides. The highway has borne the brunt of multiple blockades since August 26 following torrential rains. Though briefly reopened on August 30, it was shut again due to fresh incidents of flooding and landslide activity.

Restoration Efforts in High Gear

At the landslide-affected Thard stretch, where a part of the road was washed away and buried beneath debris, rescue teams have removed six large boulders and excavated three additional rocks to clear the path. Workers are aiming to fully restore traffic flow in the coming days.

Traffic Advisory & Travel Disruption

A traffic police advisory warned commuters that no vehicles are permitted between Jakheni (Udhampur) and Bali Nallah, or from Nagrota through Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, and Banihal to Srinagar. Passengers heading to Katra and Udhampur have been asked to carry photo ID for verification.

Impact Across the Region

The highway closure has led to over 4,000 vehicles stranded at multiple locations across Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, Ramban, Kashmir Valley, and parts of Punjab. Despite the national route being blocked, traffic on the alternative Mughal Road remains smooth.
