Acting Chief Justice P B Bajanthri issued the order in response to a petition filed by advocate Vivekanand Singh and others, who described the video as a “defamatory publication” and a violation of restrictions imposed on political parties under the Representation of the People Act.
Court’s Interim Directions
Additional Solicitor General K N Singh, appearing for the Union Government, stated that the court made it clear that “the video shall remain withdrawn till the next date of hearing.”
The petition also named Rahul Gandhi, the Union Government, and the Election Commission of India as respondents.
EC counsel Siddharth Prasad said that the court has also issued notices to Facebook, Twitter, and Google, directing them to file their responses before the next hearing. The exact date is expected to be mentioned in the order sheet to be uploaded on the High Court’s website.
Background
The controversy began last week when the Bihar Congress posted the video on its official X handle with the caption in Hindi: “Sahab ke sapno mein aayi maa. Dekhiye rochak samvaad.” (Mother appeared in sahab’s dream. Watch an interesting interaction between them.)
The video, created using artificial intelligence, depicted the Prime Minister’s mother criticising his politics. The post sparked strong reactions, leading to legal intervention.
