LEH, Sept 26: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on Friday by a police party led by Ladakh DGP S D Singh Jamwal, two days after violent protests over demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh left four people dead and nearly 90 injured, officials said.

Sonam Wangchuk was taken into custody by Ladakh Police, two days after violent statehood protests in Leh.
Wangchuk, who had recently ended his hunger strike, was taken into custody at around 2:30 PM. The exact charges against him have not yet been made public by the authorities.
His arrest comes amid heightened security in Leh, where curfew and restrictions under Section 163 of the BNSS remain in place to prevent further unrest. Police and paramilitary forces continue to be deployed in strength across the town.
The administration has blamed Wangchuk's hunger strike and speeches for allegedly provoking the protests, though Wangchuk has repeatedly urged youth to maintain peace and non-violence.
