Srinagar, Sept 8: An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) arrived in Kashmir to assess the widespread damage caused by recent heavy rainfall and resultant floods. The team visited the districts of Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama, and Budgam to inspect affected areas, evaluate relief initiatives, and consult with local authorities.
District-Level Briefings & Field Assessments
In Anantnag, officials briefed the IMCT with updates on evacuation, temporary shelters, connectivity restoration, health and sanitation interventions, and crop losses. The team also conducted surveys of embankments, roads, and nallahs to identify immediate restoration requirements.
Shopian officials outlined damage to infrastructure such as roads, bridges, water supply systems, power assets, and standing crops in the lower riparian regions of Zainapora.
In Pulwama, the IMCT visited flood-affected areas including Drangbal, Pampore, and Khadermoh Kakapora, interacting with locals and urging submission of detailed project reports (DPRs) for flood protection infrastructure.
Budgam saw the team reviewing relief, restoration, and resilience efforts in areas such as Shalina, Panzan Bridge, and Bus Adda Chadoora. District administration shared both short-term and long-term flood mitigation planning.
Next Steps and Government Support
The IMCT has directed all departments to compile detailed damage assessments and data for submission to the Government of India to ensure immediate assistance and long-term rehabilitation. The Union Government has assured full financial and logistical support, signaling a move toward bolstering disaster preparedness in the region.
