
CBI Special Court, Lucknow, convicted and sentenced four accused in Rs 6.8 crore bank fraud case
LUCKNOW, Sep 23: The Special Judge, CBI Court, Lucknow has convicted and sentenced four accused, including a senior Bank of India official and two private individuals, in connection with a Rs 6.8 crore bank fraud case.
The convicted persons are Pankaj Khare, Deputy Chief Manager, Bank of India, along with private individuals Rajesh Khanna and Shamshul Haq Siddiqui. They have each been sentenced to three years' imprisonment and fined Rs 1.25 lakh. In addition, private company M/s Anita Contractor and Construction Pvt Ltd has been fined Rs 1 lakh in the case.
The case was registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 9 July 2008, following a complaint from the Assistant General Manager of Bank of India, Hazratganj branch, Lucknow. It was alleged that between 2004 and 2006, the accused conspired to cheat the bank by availing cash credit facilities using forged and fabricated non-existent work orders and property documents to create fake mortgages. The funds were misused, causing a wrongful loss of Rs 6.8 crore to the bank.
After investigation, CBI filed a chargesheet on 23 December 2009 against nine accused, including Anita Jain, Managing Director of M/s Anita Contractor and Construction Pvt Ltd; Mohd. Isteyaq Khan; Poonam Sinha; Prem Prakash Asthana, Chief Manager, Bank of India; Sudhir Kumar Jain, Proprietor of M/s Jamuna Construction Company; and others.
During the trial, the court discharged proceedings against Prem Prakash Asthana and Poonam Sinha. Accused Sudhir Jain and Mohd. Isteyaq Khan passed away during the proceedings. Anita Jain was acquitted of all charges on the benefit of doubt.
The court, after evaluating evidence, convicted and sentenced the remaining accused accordingly.
