J&K Cabinet meeting on Assembly session

SRINAGAR, Sept 23: The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet on Wednesday recommended to Lieutenant Governor that the Autumn Session of the Assembly be convened on October 13. Sources said the session is likely to be brief, spanning seven days till October 20.

The cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and attended by all ministers, finalised the proposal. The recommendation has been sent to the LG for formal approval.

Under the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, no more than six months should elapse between Assembly sessions. Since the last sitting was held on April 29, the next session must be convened before October 28.

Key issues expected to dominate the session include restoration of statehood and debates over reservation policy. In the previous session, three resolutions on statehood lapsed amid disruptions by the National Conference, following the rejection of an adjournment motion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The reservation issue is also likely to resurface, with People’s Conference President Sajad Gani Lone, MLA from Handwara, having strongly criticised the government in earlier debates.
