BJP Leader Arvind Gupta Slams NC Govt Over Water Crisis in Jammu

JAMMU, Sept 4: Senior BJP leader and MLA Jammu West, Arvind Gupta, today launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC) Government for its alleged failure to provide relief to the people of Jammu city, especially in several wards that continue to face acute drinking water shortages.

Gupta, accompanied by BJP treasurer Prabhat Jamwal, spokesperson Rajni Sethi, media in-charge Dr. Pardeep Mahotra, OBC Morcha president Brahamjyot, senior leader Bawa Sharma, Mandal president Kushant Dafara and others, addressed a press conference at the J&K BJP headquarters, Trikuta Nagar. He said the NC Government’s response to the recent climatic tragedy — marked by incessant rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods — was grossly inadequate.

“Jammu Among Worst Sufferers”

Highlighting the situation, Gupta stated that Jammu has been among the worst-hit regions. He said several families, particularly those from economically weaker backgrounds, lost their homes and belongings due to the floods. “People are facing untold hardships while waiting for basic relief measures,” he said.

Drinking Water Crisis

The MLA noted that nearly two lakh residents were directly hit after the Sheetali water supply system was severely damaged. Despite early assurances, the supply remains suspended even after more than 10 days. “Certain wards still have no drinking water, while many localities are clogged with filthy water. Immediate dewatering of these areas is urgently needed,” Gupta demanded.

He also admitted moral responsibility, acknowledging his inability to ensure timely water supply to his constituency. Gupta criticized the PHE Department for relying on water tankers as a temporary measure, calling it “ineffective and poorly planned.”

Central Relief and Funds

Gupta said the Union Home Minister has assured financial support to restore essential services and compensate for losses. He highlighted that BJP public representatives had collectively contributed ₹35.5 crore for relief efforts, with each BJP MLA donating ₹1 crore and each MP contributing ₹2.5 crore.

Future Demands

The MLA urged that PHE supplies be returned to the parent department to prevent recurring crises. He also promised to advocate for permanent flood control measures, including strengthening of walls along drains and removal of encroachments around water bodies.

Call for Accountability

Arvind Gupta concluded by urging both government departments and elected representatives to take collective responsibility for preventing such disasters in the future. “We must act now to ensure that people do not face similar suffering again,” he said.
