AIIMS Project Site Originally Chosen on Political Grounds: Omar
Srinagar, Sept 8: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today acknowledged that the site for the AIIMS Awantipora project was chosen on political considerations without evaluating its suitability for a hospital. This oversight, he said, caused significant delays in the project.
Redesign and Security Delays
Omar clarified that it wasn’t the fault of AIIMS or CPWD; rather, the location was pre-decided politically. The Army subsequently raised security concerns, which necessitated conducting fresh Detailed Project Reports (DPRs). “It took more than a year to finalize the new DPRs. Naturally, with the revised plans, the entire project had to be restructured, which also led to some cost escalation,” he explained.
Timelines Reset
The Project Director and CPWD supervising the work have assured that full completion is expected by September or October of next year, with commissioning scheduled for December. The Outpatient Department (OPD) is planned to start in March–April, followed soon after by commencement of classes. The Inpatient Department (IPD) is projected to be ready by November–December.
