India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-Prime Missile from Rail-Based Launcher

NEW DELHI, Sept 25: India on Wednesday successfully test-fired its next-generation Agni-Prime missile with a range of 2,000 km from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher system, marking a significant milestone in the country’s strategic capabilities.

India successfully test-fires Agni-Prime missile from rail-based launcher

The test, conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), was carried out under a full operational scenario. The Ministry of Defence said the missile launch met all mission objectives in a "textbook" fashion and its trajectory was tracked by multiple ground stations.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the achievement, stating that the successful launch places India among a select group of nations with the capability to launch such canisterised missile systems from a moving rail platform. “This system allows cross-country mobility and rapid launch within a short reaction time,” he posted on X.

The Agni-Prime is equipped with independent launch capability features, state-of-the-art communication systems, and advanced protection mechanisms. This development will enable the future induction of rail-based missile systems into Indian defence services, significantly enhancing operational flexibility.

The road-mobile variant of the Agni-Prime missile has already been inducted into the Strategic Forces Command after a series of successful trials. The new rail-based capability is expected to further boost India’s strategic deterrence posture.

The test-firing comes just over four-and-a-half months after the military conflict with Pakistan, underlining India’s resolve to strengthen its strategic deterrence infrastructure.
